Turns out you don't have to travel out of state to learn how to zip line or take a hot air balloon ride. In spite of what you might think about Ohio, we have some pretty talented individuals and unique venues that offer unusual things to do here in the heart of it all.
1) Zip line
Zip lines aren't just for the tropics. There are actually several places to learn how to zip line in Ohio such as Cumberland's Wild Zipline Safari, Hocking Hills Canopy Tours and Glenmont's Tree Frog Canopy Tours.
2) Take a ride in the sky.
Several locations throughout Ohio offer hot air balloon rides including places such as Mid Ohio Balloon Adventures in Mt. Gilead and Fly Ohio Ballooning in Marysville.
3) Make your own glass.
Visit the Glass Pavilion at the Toledo Museum of Art where you can create your own wine glass, vase or other glass work of art from scratch.
4) Weave your own basket.
Whether you watch the basket weaving pros at work at the Longaberger Basket Company in Frazeysburg or you take a basket weaving class at Hutchison’s Hilltop Haven at Hocking Hills in Rockbridge, you will probably have more basket weaving knowledge than your out-of-state friends.
5) Learn to sail.
Don't have a friend or family member to show you the ropes of sailing the open seas? Learn to tack, trim and cruise on Lake Erie at Harbor North Sailing School in Huron.
6) Try the artisan way.
Learn how to make heritage crafts including quilting, wreath making and wood carving at the historic Sauder Village in Archbold.
7) Have the KitchenAid experience.
At the KitchenAid Experience Center in Greenville, you can test new, innovative KitchenAid products firsthand. It's every culinary artist's dream.
8) Learn to create your own children's book art.
At the Mazza Museum in Findlay, you can learn to draw or paint your own renditions of famous children's book artwork. .
9) Drive a real race car.
Legally break the speed limit and learn how to drive a high performance race car at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington.
10) Explore shipwrecks off the Lake Erie Islands.
Lake Erie has claimed more shipwrecks than any of the other Great Lakes over the years, giving divers a dense concentration of shipwrecks to discover.
