North Dakota has so many hidden pockets of beautiful, untouched natural environments that will take your breath away. Certain small towns have the privilege of being located right in middle of these spots, some of which you have probably never heard of. Let's explore one of these places - picture yourself in a tiny town that's barely on the map anymore, but surrounding it is absolutely gorgeous scenery. That will take you right to here:
This little-known town is located in central North Dakota, a little southeast of Bismarck.
It is called Moffit, and it is one of the more quiet spots in the state. It is technically an unincorporated community and has an almost nonexistent population.
However, Moffit has been around since at least 1906 when its post office (which is still in use today) was created. People still visit this town to see the amazing national wildlife refuge located right by it.
This refuge is called Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge, named for the lake that it surrounds. The lake does fit its description as very long! Not only that, but it is stunning to see in person.
The lake serves as a hub for hundreds of bird species including pelicans, ducks, geese, herons, hawks, and more.
The grassy prairie hills surrounding the lake are also abundant with animals that call is home. Whether it be the middle of summer or deep within a North Dakota winter, this place is always teeming with life.
When visiting the wildlife refuge or the town of Moffit, you will be able to walk through the tall native grasses and witness the jaw-dropping panoramic views of the lake. It is truly a one-of-a-kind spot!
What a unique town! Moffit can be reached by heading south on US Highway 83 off of I-94 just east of Bismarck, ND. For more information on the Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge, click here.
This isn't the only small town in the Peace Garden State that has amazing natural scenery, it has an entire list of them - check it out here!
