In a lot of small towns, it can feel like there's something missing. You get the friendly hometown feel but you have to deal with the lack of amenities and entertainment that would come with living in a city. A few unique places embody the spirit of small towns while offering only the best things about cities; Central City is one of those places.
Located in Merrick County near Grand Island and right on the Oregon Trail, Central City boasts a population of just under 3,000.
One of the shining stars of Central City is the Dark Island Trail, an 8-mile-long trail that starts just south of Central City and stretches to Marquette. Running along a former railroad route, the trail passes over a beautiful wooden bridge over the Platte, through wooded areas, and across fields. At some point in the future, the trail will extend right into the center of Central City.
Although Bader Memorial Park is technically in Chapman about 10 miles away, it's an important part of recreation in Central City. The park features seven fishing ponds, an extensive trail system, and a sandy swimming beach. Many of the trails are open to equestrians, making the park a wonderful place to unwind and go for a leisurely ride. Bader Park is also used as an outdoor classroom, offering programs to help enrich children's education. At one time the park offered wifi, but in the interest of helping visitors unwind and disconnect it is no longer available.
In the summer, kids and adults alike love the Central City Aquatic Center. Water slides, diving boards, water toys, and lap lanes offer something to keep everyone busy and happy. How can you not have fun on a huge twisty slide?
Central City prides itself on being community oriented, and its several parks and modern community center/performing arts center show it. The beloved Kernel Field hosts local and state-wide baseball teams and tournaments. North Park and South Park offer even more fun, with more ball fields, picnic areas, playground equipment, walking trails, a bandstand, and concession facilities.
Don't worry about finding a great meal while you're here. There are plenty of wonderful options, one of the most popular being the Lincoln Manor Steakhouse and Lounge. As you might expect, there's plenty of beef on the menu served in a variety of ways. Also be sure to check out Waffles N More for an unforgettable breakfast or brunch.
For a slightly more grown-up way to unwind, Prairie Creek Vineyards/Winery offers tastings, tours of the facility, and delicious meals. A glass or two of their award-winning wines is the perfect way to relax after a day of non-stop activities.
Central City sure looks like fun. Have you spent any time there? If you can't get enough of small-town Nebraska, be sure to check out the tiny town of Brownville and the even tinier town of Monowi.
