The Mississippi Town In The Middle Of Nowhere That’s So Worth The Journey

Leland, Mississippi, offers a rich blend of museums, historic sites, and local eateries, making it a worthwhile destination despite its small size and remote location.

Some of Mississippi’s small towns have lots to offer — and that’s exactly the case with Leland. With several museums, tasty eateries, and a quaint historic district, the tiny town may be in the middle of nowhere but is so worth the journey. Take a look:

Located on the banks of Deer Creek in the heart of the Mississippi Delta, it doesn’t get much more remote than Leland. It doesn’t get much smaller, either — the town has a population of roughly 5,000.

Leland may be out of the way, but it has a lot going for it, making it the perfect place for an in-state adventure. The Jim Henson Delta Boyhood Exhibit, which is situated along Highway 82, is one of the first sites you see when entering the town.

The one-of-a-kind museum pays homage to Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. Sure to entertain visitors of all ages, the museum houses artifacts and memorabilia from Henson's early creative years.

Highway 61 Blues Museum is another of Leland’s must-visit attractions. Dubbed a "musical treasure," the museum contains information and memorabilia about local blues legends, the history of the genre, and more.

The Mississippi Wildlife Heritage Museum is also in Leland. Stop by the museum for a fascinating look at animals native to the area as well as the outdoorsmen who have helped preserve our natural resources.

You can do more than visit museums in Leland, though. There are also a few great eateries, including Lillo’s, which has been in business since 1948!

The decades old eatery has long been known for its famous pizzas and Italian dishes.

Cicero’s is another great place to grab a bite in Leland. The family-owned eatery features a diverse menu that includes everything from burgers and catfish to tamales.

Established in 1886, Leland has a lot of history — some of which you can see for yourself in the town’s 165-acre historic district.

Among the impressive buildings from the past is The Thompson Mansion.

Dating back to the early 1900s, the home has been transformed into a B&B — and is a great place to stay overnight in Leland.

Plan your visit to Leland accordingly, and you can attend one of the town’s annual events. A crawfish festival, Frogfest, and Christmas on Deer Creek are a few of Leland’s most anticipated events.

Boasting history, small town charm, and some great sites and attractions, Leland is the perfect place for your next adventure.
