Well, fellow Michiganders: August is officially upon us here in the Great Lakes State — and there are only a few weeks left until fall makes its arrival in full force. While we certainly appreciate many elements of autumn, it’s not easy to let go of summertime. Here are nine thoughts every Michigander has as the last days of summer fade slowly into the past.
1. "This town feels so quiet."
As summer wraps up in the Great Lakes State, tourists begin to make their way home. Depending on where you live, this can be either a blessing or a curse. While we love the economic benefits of tourism throughout Michigan, there’s nothing quite like reclaiming your touristy hometown as summer ends.
2. "I refuse to put away my shorts."
You know the drill: we Michiganders will wear our warm-weather clothing for as long as possible. In fact, there’s always that one friend who wears shorts throughout the winter months. While most of us wouldn’t go quite that far, it’s still difficult to accept the arrival of cooler weather by switching to our fall wardrobes.
3. "You can’t stop me from spending all day at the beach."
It’s important to soak up as much beach time as possible before summertime in Michigan draws to a close. Don’t worry: your fellow Michiganders certainly won’t judge you for visiting the beach every single day… all day. We just adore our Great Lakes, and there’s nothing more precious than waterfront lounging.
4. "Ice cream is totally appropriate for all three meals."
When colder months roll around, many of our favorite ice cream shops close up for the season. That’s why we might just start eating ice cream for all three meals per day during the late weeks of summer. A sundae has nuts, plenty of dairy, and even a cherry on top… that’s a balanced meal, right?
5. "It’s never too late for another weekend Up North."
September might bring the official end of summer, but we Michiganders will squeeze in as much time Up North as possible before the kiddos head back to school and "real life" kicks in again. In fact, some of us have even been known to spend the very last few days of summer at our lakeside family cottages.
6. "Ah, it’s almost time to be disappointed by the Lions again."
The end of summer means that fall is nearly upon us, and you know what that means: football season is on its way! Sure, most Americans look forward to the beginning of football season, but there’s a special sense of impending doom as we Michiganders wait to see how the Lions will let us down this year.
7. "Will those crickets EVER be quiet?!"
You know it’s August when the crickets seem to chirp 24/7. While there’s something oddly calming about the rhythmic chirping of crickets, no one can handle their sounds all the time — and late summer seems to inspire all kinds of noises from these tiny creatures.
8. "This was the best summer ever."
It doesn’t matter how many summers you’ve spent in the Great Lakes State: there’s always something new and magical to experience. If you’re lucky enough to be a lifelong Michigander, you’ll understand that every summer spent here just seems to be better than the last.
9. "I can’t wait for fall in Michigan."
As much as we adore summer in Michigan, we’re equally enamored with our state during chillier months. While we certainly wouldn’t mind a few extra weeks of summer, there’s always a distinct sense of excitement for all the beauty and fun that fall brings here in the Great Lakes State.
