Michigan no doubt has some real gems of communities throughout the state. But with every bright spot, there are bound to be some troubled areas as well. It's just human nature and acknowledging it shouldn't be avoided or vilified. Instead, maybe with this knowledge, we can work to improve these places in Michigan that have struggled.
10) Fruitport
Barbed wire fences and bars over the windows and doors are an absolute must for this 17,000 person populated city that saw a whopping 534 property crime complaints in 2013.
9) Jackson
Jackson, which lies west of Ann Arbor is neither a Detroit suburb nor a Lake Michigan coastal city thus making it an anomaly of sorts for this list as nearly 400 residents reported themselves as victims of vicious attacks.
8) Flint Township
Violent crimes are on the rise while reports of robbery wane in this township of Flint, making it a slightly safer place to live than its sister city.
7) Highland Park
Three years ago residents would find themselves at a 1 in 61 chance of being the victim of assault in this Detroit suburb.
6) Flint
Like Detroit, Flint has become a safer place overall but the presence of multiple crimes committed against people remains a harsh reality for its populace.
5) Harper Woods
This Detroit suburb unfortunately has residents placed as victims of robbery in a 1 in 15 chance.
4) Benton Charter Township
The Township of Benton Charter has seen its fair share of property crime over the years with the number of homes being robbed annually increasing since data collection began in 2013, so investing in a security system is a must in this Township.
3) Detroit
While Detroit may seem like the target city of Michigan for crime, it has statistically speaking, become safer in the previous years for residents.
2) Muskegon Heights
Another small town that lines Lake Michigan, Muskegon Heights also reported more than 200 violent crimes in 2013.
1) Benton Harbor
Statistically-speaking, Benton Harbor is the most dangerous place in Michigan. With more than 200 violent crimes in a city of about 10,000, you have a 1 in 45 chance of being the victim of a violent act.
So what are you thoughts? Surely, some of these places are to be expected, especially some of the larger cities. But just because a place has a bad track record, does it mean it's not worth fixing up. Tell us what you think!
