This weekend getaway in south Louisiana will simply blow you away. There’s something for everyone—great food, museums, wildlife, and of course—hot sauce.
Where? Avery Island, of course. To make a weekend out of it, though, first book a room at the Rip Van Winkle estate.
Rip Van Winkle estate sits on a wide salt dome, giving the central mansion a stately appearance and making the spot a favorite for weddings.
Joseph Jefferson, an actor made famous for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle, built this historic home and grounds.
After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the gardens, hop in the car and start your day at Avery Island.
There are a variety of tours to choose from.
You can tour the Tabasco Pepper Sauce Factory and see how the sauce gets made.

Walk around the beautiful grounds where the peppers are grown.
Or simply wander the oak lined paths and admire the gorgeous oak trees.
Jungle Gardens, next to the factory and restaurant, includes over 170 acres of natural beauty.
There is even a pagoda shrine to a centuries-old Buddha, gifted to the McIlhenny famiy in 1936.
Many birds call Jungle Gardens home or visit during their migration.
Alligators can be seen fairly often as well.
But the trees really are the most amazing.
After a long day of touring and wandering, you can stop by Avery Island restaurant/shop for some refreshments.
After a long day of touring you can then hop back in the car and visit St. Martinville, where you’ll find a cozy little restaurant called St Johns.
This Cajun favorite serves delicious gumbos and blue crab dishes. The crab cakes are the best!
Don't forget to catch the sunset.
It will be the perfect Louisiana weekend getaway.
