Small towns are the heart of Kentucky as so many of us grew up in them, and continue to support these beloved communities. There's one particular small town in Kentucky that is ideally situated between Louisville and Lexington, and also very close to our capital, Frankfort. The town of Shelbyville is a horse-lover's dream destination, but there's so much more to this enchanting area. So much so, that this little slice of Kentucky heaven has quietly maintained its historic charm, while thriving with modern expectations. Founded in 1792, Shelbyville is filled with history. Known as the American Saddlebred Capital of the World, there's so much to love about this quaint town.
Located in the heart of horse country, there are plenty of scenic drives to take past horse farms and many entertaining horse shows held throughout the year. Shelbyville is well-known for this distinction, but it has been adding to its repertoire over the years and now has so much more to offer.
One of the most recognized spots in Shelbyville is Claudia Sanders Dinner House.
Opened by Colonel Sanders himself in honor of his wife, Claudia, you have to dine here at least once during your visit to the area. It may not be new or ahead of its time, but it does have a classic southern experience with some of the best fried chicken you'll ever taste.
Another classic restaurant in the area that still manages to maintain a cool factor is the Bell House Restaurant.
The location in the heart of downtown is appealing, as is the eclectic menu offerings and rotating specials.
Shelbyville may be known for its classic southern style when it comes to dining, but there are plenty of modern choices, as well.
Harvest Coffee & Cafe, pictured above, serves delicious coffee along with locally-sourced menu items, and an impressive list of craft beers, bourbon and wine.
When looking for something to do in Shelbyville, its location makes it easy. There are several spots within the city limits and you are also a short drive to countless other options.
You can check out a number of stops on the bourbon trail, but we recommend you start with a local, beautiful destination - Jeptha Creed Distillery. Take a tour, do a tasting and enjoy a delicious lunch on this lovely property.
Talon Winery is another local favorite that often has live music and is a delightful stop for a glass of wine on their covered patio.
