Kansas is filled to the brim with small towns, and everywhere you go there's usually a new one that you haven't discovered. Once in a while, most of us need a breath of peace and quiet to help us relax. This little community sits near a tourist hot spot, but is often overlooked when people plan trips. We've looked through a lot of Kansas towns, and after finding this one, we've decided that this one might just be the most peaceful town in the state.
Have you heard of a small town named Spearville? Well, we have!
It's a tiny town that was deeded to the Arkansas Valley Town Company in March of 1873. The Bill Doolin Gang robbed Ford County Bank here, back in 1892. Can you imagine living that long ago?
Today, the town is the site of a large wind farm, the third to be built in Kansas.
It's got a gorgeous wind farm outside of town that spans 5,000 acres. It farms enough electricity to fuel 33,000 homes, which is more than enough for little ol' Spearville.
It's home to a number of local businesses, including Windmill Restaurant.
It's a windy place, but the door here is held open by customers who want to enjoy tasty Mexican cuisine for lunch or dinner. They're open Monday through Saturday from 11am until 3, and 5pm until 8. Home cooking has to sleep too, sometimes!
Today, there's a population around 800 living here.
It's pretty easy to know your neighbors, and even their entire family as if they were your own. It's a close-knit community, but they like it that way! It's a wonderfully small town that wouldn't change for the world. It's truly peaceful, and one of the small towns in Kansas that will probably remember you if you return.
Here's a map showing where Spearville's located, or you can take US hwy 50 northeast out of Dodge City for about 20 minutes. Happy trails!
After you're done in Spearville, make sure you go explore this enchanting town right on the water.
