Doing a few ski runs down our groomed mountain trails isn't the only way to experience the magic and beauty of winter. A relaxing, scenic drive offers all the rural beauty, picture-perfect overlooks, and snowy mountain peaks you could hope for, but experienced from the comfort and warmth of your car. While Idaho has dozens of scenic byways to choose from (over 2,400 official miles of them, to be exact), one is particularly accessible and beautiful in winter: the Payette River Scenic Byway.
Starting just west of Boise, the Payette River Scenic Byway meanders along Highway 55 for over a hundred miles to the tiny community of New Meadows.
This scenic route not only passes over the historic Rainbow Bridge over the Payette River, but passes through the ruggedly beautiful communities of Horseshoe Bend, Cascade, Donnelly, and McCall. Not to mention the charming unincorporated towns of Valley County as well!
With picturesque views of the foothills and distant mountains, along with the rushing sights and sounds of the river, this trip was once the home of the delightful Thunder Mountain Line railroad as well. The trip was a delight for riders of all ages - and for good reason!
Of course, winter dramatically transforms the landscape into a snowy haven.
Valley County is home to both Tamarack and Brundage resorts, if you feel like taking a side trip for some winter adventuring.
You'll see both Cascade and Payette Lake in the distance - or up close and personal if you choose.
In the summer, the section of the river around Banks and above Smith's Ferry is perfect for sightseeing and watching rafters and kayakers challenge themselves on the whitewater.
But if sheer beauty and a relaxing drive is your goal, this is one heavenly place to do it!

There's no doubt about it: Idaho is a beautiful wonderland year round! While you're in the area, check out Idaho's biggest winter festival, or brave this challenging hike. For another easy drive in the opposite direction, check out the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway from Boise to Lowman.
But if epic scenic drives and extended vacays are more your style, this 2017 Idaho Road Trip Bucket List is for you!
