Every so often a town rises to the top and catches unsuspecting travelers and adventurers completely off guard in the most awesome way possible. Cascade, Idaho is just one of these incredible places that every Idahoan should explore at least once, no matter the season. With a history that is just as much luck as it was fate, in recent years Cascade has been growing in popularity right alongside its sister towns, Donnelly and McCall. In just one day exploring this magical area you can experience some the warmest hospitality, unexpected scenery, easy-access camping, and best recreation in the state. At its heart, Cascade is true Idaho, which is just one reason why Sunset Magazine has featured this home away from home numerous times.
Only 1000 or so locals make up the full-time population of Cascade, but during the summer and winter seasons the town comes alive as visitors flock from around the state to enjoy the special charm of this western lower-mountain town. And once you've escaped here for a day trip, you might just be tempted to extend that vacation permanently. Here are just a few things you'll find in this wonderful area:
If you're traveling from the direction of Boise on Hwy 55, you'll cross the scenic Rainbow Bridge into Smiths Ferry. Specifically designed by renowned New York architect William Hardy to complement rather than detract from the natural scenery, this is the longest single arch bridge in Idaho, The Payette River beneath it is a stunning site as well.
Idaho is bursting with natural hot springs around every corner thanks to our incredible natural geology, and there are quite a few around Cascade just ready to welcome visitors with a hot, relaxing soak. Check out both Goldbug Hot Springs and Mile 16 Hot Springs for some epic scenery while you marinate.
But the biggest draw to Cascade is its namesake lake. Technically a reservoir formed by the nearby Cascade Dam, this expansive body of water and surrounding area is home to over 200 camp sites, multiple yurts, plenty of boat launches, and gorgeous views of the mountains.
The Payette River -- a popular extreme and recreational rafting spot -- is also home to Idaho's only whitewater park. Kayak, river surf, tube, and frolic to your heart's content, and in no time at all you'll be good enough to take part in the intense Payette River Games.
The weather here is absolutely divine, with four distinct seasons, plenty of snow and rain to keep vegetation flourishing, and just as many sunny days to enjoy in the great outdoors.
For those who enjoy a bed while camping, Arrowhead RV Park is a special stop that features over 50 uniquely carved totem poles on the private grounds.
But for those seeking a little extra luxury, the Ashley Inn offer absolutely spectacular views of the water with all the comfort and amenities of home -- plus a few extra thrown in. From here, you'll have easy access to the lake, trails, and much more.
But one of the best things about Cascade is how closely connected its history is with that of McCall and Donnelly -- both of which are a mere stone's throw away. A quick trip through each of these quaint communities will showcase delicious homestyle food, beautiful views of the mountains, unique historical remnants, seasonal festivals, beautiful churches, and all the mountain town charm your heart craves.
If you love the beauty and unique small town vibes of cozy communities like this, you won't want to miss the town of Hagerman on the Snake River. Filled with unexpectedly green desert oases, plunging canyons, historical sites, and small town hospitality, it's a definite must-see.
