There's nothing we love more than a small town. Visiting small towns is a great way to get away from the ordinary and discover shops, restaurants, and other places that are actually unique. This small town in Florida is incredibly enchanting and totally unique.
Welcome to Lake Placid, a tiny town of around 2,200 people located in Highlands County in south central Florida. Lake Placid is nicknamed the "Caladium Capital of the World" because 98% of these plant's bulbs come from right here.
In 2012 it was even named "America's Most Interesting Town" by Reader's Digest. Pay a visit to this charming small town, and it's easy to see why.
Lake Placid is equally known by another well-deserved nickname, "The Town of Murals." The tiny town has almost 50 stunning outdoor murals, so everywhere you turn there's another masterpiece.
These murals provide a sort of walking tour of the town, showing important pieces of Lake Placid's history. This one is devoted to the town's turpentine industry.
And this one pays tribute to the town's history as part of Florida's famous citrus industry.
The murals are done in stunning detail, often with incredible optical illusions. Look at how this bass just leaps off the wall to catch that lure!
Keep your eyes open for little details. For example, this is not really a safe, this is the garbage can near the bank.
This mural depict's another quirky fact about this adorable town. It is home to a longstanding clown school and museum called Toby's Clown Foundation.
If you're wondering when to come visit, the annual Caladium Festival, held July 28th through the 30th, is a good time to check it out. Then come back to check out the grape-stomping festival hosted by Henscratch Farms Vineyard & Winery in August.
