Hiding in Calaveras County is a sleepy little Gold Rush town that flies under the radar for most people. This place is utterly fascinating and well worth a day trip when you find yourself in the area. Not only is the story behind this town remarkable, but you'll find that there's plenty of attractions to keep you entertained all day. Mokelumne Hill should be on every Northern Californian's bucket list. If you're in search for a delightful destination to visit this summer, be sure to check this place out.
One of the most charming little Gold Rush towns is Mokelumne Hill (lovingly referred to as Moke Hill by locals) in the western region of Calaveras County. Boasting a small population of just over 600 people, this timeless town still has a lot going for it.
As you walk down the historic Main Street, you'll be blown away by the amount of old structures that are still standing. The entire town is actually classified as a California Historical Landmark.
Few people realize that Mokelumne Hill was actually one of the richest mining towns in the state during the Gold Rush. So much gold was found in the town's surrounding hills that miners were restricted to claims of just 16 square feet.
Take your time while exploring the historic landmarks of this quaint town. A notable spot is the beautiful Hotel Leger which serves as a hotel, restaurant, and famous ghost-hunting spot. Paranormal enthusiasts can even pick up a ghost hunting kit from the front desk!
Unlike many other ex-mining towns, Mokelumne Hill is still a thriving town. In fact, the town is home to a small but charming arts and culture scene. Make sure to stop by the lovely Renegade Winery during your visit for a tasting.
The town is even home to an art gallery called Petroglyphe Gallery. The gallery is home to original local works of art and also occasionally holds workshops and artist demonstrations.
If you're more of an outdoorsy type of person, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the recreational opportunities that Moke Hill boasts. The tranquil Mokelumne River is just a short drive away and makes for the perfect place to sneak in a quick dip in the water.
On of the most notable excursions in the area is the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail. This massive trail takes you through a variety of landscapes including foothill woodlands, chaparral, and canyon. It's definitely one of the most impressive hikes in California's Gold Country.
