These Are The 5 Best Ways To Save Money On A Family Ski Trip
Skiing can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and connect with family. However, it also has the reputation of being an expensive hobby. Follow these tips to make sure your family ski trip stays as affordable as possible.
1. Compare flights to regional and international airports.
Though common travel advice holds that flying into smaller airports will usually save you cash, that’s not always true during the height of ski season. Flying into a larger hub airport near a ski destination might actually be cheaper than selecting a regional airport due to the higher volume of flights.
2. Choose a resort that’s close to the airport.
It’s always a good idea to select a ski resort as close to the airport as possible. This means that you might be able to take an airport shuttle or public transportation to your resort, saving money on a rental car or cab. It also means that you won’t need to stop for breaks on the way to the airport, saving money on snacks and gas.
3. Hunt for resort package deals.
Bargain hunters shouldn’t be deterred by "all inclusive" packages at resorts – they’re sometimes cheaper than paying for accommodation, lift tickets, lessons, food, and transportation separately. Do your research and find out if you might be able to snag a package deal that works with your family’s budget.
4. Always book in advance.
When you have kids, you can see school vacations looming months in advance. There’s no excuse for not booking your stay at ski resorts with plenty of time to spare, especially since early-bird packages at many resorts can save you hundreds of dollars. Book by mid-summer to early fall to save the most money.
5. Skip the bigger resorts if your family is just learning to ski.
If you and your loved ones are just learning how to make it down the slopes, don’t splurge on a top-tier resort or trendy mountain. Opt for smaller resorts that cater to families to get the best deals and a great environment for learning to ski.
