The Horrifying Reason You Should Never Order These Two Things On A Plane

The next time you think about grabbing a hot beverage from the airplane food cart, you might want to think twice about ordering coffee, tea, or water.

An EPA report found that a shocked 1 in 8 planes fails the agency’s standard water safety tests. This means that the quality of the water in some planes’ tanks can be so poor as to be deemed unsafe.

Business Insider recently spoke to plane staff regarding this issue and received the following comment from one flight attendant: “Flight attendants will not drink hot water on the plane. They will not drink plain coffee, and they will not drink plain tea.”

The recent report also stated that 1 in 10 plane water supplies tested positive for the presence of coliform (the E. Coli group of bacteria) as well as bacteria typically found in human feces.

Commenting on the results of the report, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA stated that the group does not believe the EPA’s standards are strict enough or are “sufficiently enforced.”

Flight attendants will reportedly never drink the tap water onboard, concerned that while airlines are supposed to flush and clean the tanks regularly, this procedure isn’t nearly as regular as it should be.

Though staying hydrated is an important part of avoiding jet lag, consider reaching for some bottled water during your next flight.
