Travel+Leisure reported that long flights are actually an ideal environment in which to meditate and that “in flight meditation can be its very own form of Xanax.”

As meditation teacher Sharon Salzberg explained, meditation “deepens qualities like presence and clarity. It can make you more adventurous. It might also help you detach from concerns back home.”

Far from just calming the nerves of anxious fliers – though it can do that too – meditation can help to soothe your frazzled nerves after a mad dash through the airport, help loosen aching muscles, and even lower your blood pressure.

Getting started is simple – just close your eyes, relax your muscles, and focus on your breathing. If your mind wanders, acknowledge the distraction and without judgment or kicking yourself for being “bad at meditating,” simply bring your attention back to your breath.

A few minutes of meditating in your plane seat is a much healthier and cheaper way to wind down than that $15 mini bottle of merlot!
