According to a new report, more than 90 percent of U.S. passengers don’t know they may be entitled to claim compensation if their flight is delayed or canceled. But it’s a real thing, and you can actually make a claim for a flight from the past.

How much? A shocking $700 per person…per incident.

The first is if you’re ever bumped from a flight due to overbooking. This doesn’t happen too often, but if you’re the unlucky soul who has to unload their stuff from the overhead bins before takeoff, you could be owed money. This applies whether you’re flying domestically or internationally.

The second, far more common scenario is if your flight to or from Europe is delayed by more than three hours or is canceled all together. This isn’t an unlikely occurrence at all, but most passengers have no idea they have a legal right under European Union law (EC 261) to compensation.

The best part is that you can make a claim going back three years. That means if you and your travel companion were delayed in a U.S. airport for more than three hours and you were on your way to Greece, you could be owed $1,400.

Unfortunately, delays or cancelations due to “extraordinary circumstances” like severe winter storms, airline staff strikes or medial emergencies.

The best way to make sure you’re able to complete these claims is to save everything related to your flight, including flight numbers, boarding passes, confirmation emails and even luggage tickets.
