The researchers determined the average amount an American spends on transportation, food, alcohol, entertainment and lodging while on vacation in each state. Using that data, it’s possible to see what the average vacation expenditure is for a visitor to a particular state.

For the most part, the southern states turned out to be the cheapest to vacation in. The Northeast and Western regions included some of the states with the highest vacation costs.
