10 States That Leave The Grumpiest Hotel Reviews – They May Surprise You
As local travel experts, we know what travelers are looking for when it comes to finding the perfect accommodations for their next trip. To compile our lists, we scour the internet to find properties with excellent ratings and reviews, desirable amenities, nearby attractions, and that something special that makes a destination worthy of traveling for.
Thanks to companies like RewardExpert, we now know which states around the U.S. leave the grumpiest, not-so-loving hotel reviews. With a data set of 878,561 user reviews from 4,333 hotels, RewardExpert used three key metrics to help determine which states were leaving the most grouchy hotel reviews.
RewardExpert took the number of one and two star reviews proportional to population, the overall average rating for all reviews by users from each state and the number of one and two star reviews as a proportion of all reviews from that state in their data set to come up with their final ratings. While RewardExpert acknowledges that Washington D.C is technically not a state, they weren't going to dismiss the fact that this is the region where America's most grumpy hotel room reviews hailed from. The area was the most over-represented in their set of bad reviews, with 882 more than they predicted based on D.C.'s .2% share of America's population!
Second in line although technically the first state, Colorado came in as the second location to have the worst hotel reviews. Taking home the title of having the lowest average hotel room rating in our country, Colorado's hotel review average was 3.82 based on the 4696 reviews there were to look at.
It looks like the west coast has some explaining to do! Third on the list was Oregon, with 14.98% of residents leaving negative hotel reviews. With an average hotel review of 3.88, there were 33% more negative reviews than RewardExpert was predicting.
Out of all the 42,111 reviews left by Californians, only 14.40% of them were negative. The Golden State also had the third highest excess negative review rate of 44.47% over the number RewardExpert had expected based on the state's population.
Landing the sixth spot on this list thanks to Nevada's high percentage of negative reviews, out of 2,509 hotel reviews 14.78% of them were negative. As for Nevada's average hotel rating? It was 3.89.
Heading back over to the East Coast to make the grumpy Americans of the West look a little less bad, Massachusetts had an average hotel rating of 3.97! Out of the 10,769 hotel reviews that were left, 12.65% of them were negative.
Another west coast state, Washington had an average hotel rating of 3.93. Out of the 7,575 reviews that were left in Washington, 13.31% of them were negative - with 28% more negative reviews than RewardExpert had expected.
A state that tends to have a bit of a reputation for being grumpy, not many people were surprised to see New York make the top ten. Earning a spot at the bottom of the top, New York had an average hotel rating of 3.97.
Last but not least is the state of Kentucky! Kentucky actually had an average hotel rating of 4.09, which isn't shabby at all. Yet unfortunately the state had a total of 19.10% negative reviews out of the only 2,047 that were part of RewardExpert's data set. Oh no!

If you didn't recognize it from the picture, Louisiana was crowned as the state to have the nicest hotel reviews! Louisiana had an average hotel rating of 4.18, with Mississippi and New Hampshire close behind in second and third place.
