The Tunnel Trail In Texas That Will Take You On An Unforgettable Adventure
Texas is home to quite a few tunnels, but none match the remoteness of this one. Hiding way up in the Panhandle near Caprock Canyons is Clarity Tunnel, an abandoned railroad thoroughfare that currently houses a large colony of bats. It’s located along a beautiful trail, accessible year-round to all fitness levels. Let’s take a virtual hike, shall we?

Caprock Canyon Trailway spans a whopping 64.1 miles, but it can be broken up into several sections. Beginning at Monk's Crossing Trailhead gets you close enough to the tunnel while still allowing for a nice hike with breathtaking scenery.
Built in 1922, the tunnel earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places over 50 years later. You won’t find trains passing through any longer, but instead a large bat colony that’s taken up residence within its walls.
Travel back in time, your mind going wild with images of cowboys and outlaws who once traversed this very pathway. Experience history in its most natural and unadulterated state.
Over 500,000 Mexican free-tailed bats make their home here from April until October. The highest recorded numbers have been in September, when their annual southward migration begins.
Even though it’s past time to watch the swarming mass take flight, Clarity Tunnel is an incredible place to visit all year. Hiding in the remote North Texas desert and surrounded by towering red rocks, it’s a scene from Roadrunner come to life.
