These 7 Words Mean Something Completely Different If You Grew Up In Small Town Texas
Some words have a double meaning depending on whether you’re talking about city or country folk. The following seven words mean something totally different to those of us who grew up in small-town Texas.
The smaller the town, the worse the gossip — I think all of us can vouch for this. Everyone knew who everyone was dating, we knew the personal business of every family, and our parents were aware of the bad thing we did at school before we even made it home. The saying, "everybody dies famous in a small town" is undeniably true, and whether it's a blessing or a curse is up for debate.
2. FFA (or FHA)
To city folk, these are just random letters of the alphabet. However, those of us from small towns have cherished memories from our days in the Future Farmers of America (or Future Homemakers of America, for the ladies.) It only makes sense to have an organization dedicated to farming when there were dozens of farms within walking distance of the school!
To everyone else, the city isn't anything special. To us, it was the trip of a lifetime. So many lights, so much to do! As much as we loved our slow-paced lifestyle, we looked forward to every chance we got to see those lights.
There was an unspoken rule that you couldn't associate with people from other high schools in town (if there were any.) As far as you were concerned, they were your mortal enemies who were only to be spoken to while you're destroying them on the football field.
Speaking of high school football, "Friday" meant more than just the last day of the week for us. It meant game day —
the day we all gathered to support our team while they battled it out for a victory on the field.
In small-town Texas, graduation is even more pivotal of a day than it is for everyone else. Not only is it the first day of the rest of your life, but it's the day you say goodbye to your classmates who you've known your entire life. It may take all of 45 minutes, but the ceremony is an unforgettable moment.
In small-town Texas, coaches aren't just the people in charge of physical education and the sports teams — they're also your history, math, science, and social studies teachers at least once!
