Texas is full of history almost everywhere you look — but some of the places in which you’ll find it might surprise you. We don’t typically think of bars as having extensive pasts, but this spot is a major exception. Located inside the famous Menger Hotel in San Antonio, the Menger Bar is the longest continuously-operating saloon in the state… and it has plenty of stories to show for it.
Voted one of the top 10 historic bars in Texas, the Menger Bar was established in 1859. That's a lot of years to master the art of making perfect drinks, so you can rest assured that your experience will be one to remember.
It's an exact replica of the House of Lords Pub in London. You'll marvel at the paneled ceiling made of dark cherry wood, beveled mirrors from France, and brass spittoons preserved from the bar's earliest days.
The neatest part of the Menger's history is that Teddy Roosevelt recruited the famous Rough Riders here before heading off to fight the Spanish American War! It was also the site of more cattle deals than anywhere else in Texas. There's a glass case full of information and artifacts about that time period for you to check out during your visit.
