The Little Grand Canyon In Texas Is A Big Secluded Treasure

Nobody is denying the majesty of Palo Duro, but other Texas canyons deserve something recognition, too. Yellow House Canyon, located near Lubbock, is part of the expansive Llano Estacado mesa and definitely belongs on your bucket list.
Slaton is a small town near Lubbock with just over 6,000 residents. You very well might never have heard of it before, but the small community is home to a hidden gem natural wonder that belongs on everyone's bucket list.
Yellow House Canyon rests on the east side of the Llano Estacado, a mesa stretching across eastern New Mexico and northwestern Texas. It's over 5,000 feet tall in some spots and spans over 30 counties in the Lone Star State.
A narrow and shallow channel, the canyon is generally less than half a kilometer in width. The city of Lubbock has constructed small dams that form lakes, creating a water recreation area that attracts visitors from all over Texas.
As it extends outside the Lubbock city limits, the canyon gradually gets wider and deeper. Eventually, it reaches three kilometers across and 200 feet down!
You'd be hard-pressed to find many buildings in such a remote area, but this quirky little house is an exception. Artist, inventor, and businessman Robert R. Bruno Jr. began construction on the 2200 square-foot, three-level abode in 1973. He lived each day overlooking the canyon rim before passing away in 2008.
Even if you're just passing through town on Farm to Market Road 400, get ready for some truly incredible views. Lush greenery offers a stark contrast to the arid canyonlands, making for a scenic drive unlike any other.
While you're in the area, make sure to stop by Buffalo Springs Lake. With a waterfront park, campground featuring WiFi and RV hookups, nature trails, a beach, and boating, it's an ideal place to spend a warm, sunny afternoon.
