Kolaches are one of the best breakfast pastries in existence, but they’ve unfortunately been tarnished across much of the country. Czech heritage says to fill them only with fruit and cream cheese rather than sausage, eggs, or whatever else you’ll find being served these days. Luckily, we’ve preserved tradition here in Texas, and this road trip takes you to eight of the best authentic kolache shops in the state.

Czech heritage runs deep in the tiny town of West, and this iconic bakery proves it. Czech Stop, located between Waco and Dallas on I-35, is no ordinary convenience store. Kolaches of every flavor, from poppy seed to blueberry cream cheese, in addition to other sweets fill the stomachs of weary travelers.
Weikel's has two locations, but this is where the legacy began. The family-owned and operated bakery has offered award-winning kolaches for decades. Cream cheese is the bestseller, but prune and chocolate are close seconds. You'll find the shop at 2247 West State Hwy 71, La Grange, TX 78945.
Since 1912, Hruska's has served over 16 varieties of kolaches to both locals and people just passing through town. Fruit, cream cheese, and several other flavors are so popular, they sell out by afternoon daily. Walk, don't run, to 109 West State Highway 71

A family recipe handed down over two generations is responsible for these delicious pastries. The flagship store is located in El Campo, but the Clute shop has become equally if not more popular over time. 6. Two Czech Chicks Kolache Shoppe & Bakery (Danbury)
Early birds catch the worm at this sister-owned bakery that only stays open until 11 a.m. Set your alarm because these recipes come straight from the girls' grandmother. You'll find the store at 1210 Main St, Danbury, TX 77534.
Nestled in historic downtown Rosenberg, visitors to Old Main Street Bakery can enjoy some sightseeing after downing a few kolaches. Lemon poppyseed is their specialty, so don't leave without one! The bakery is located at 808 3rd St, Rosenberg, TX 77471.
