Speakeasies are coming back now that we’ve entered the Roaring ’20s, and Truth & Alibi certainly doesn’t disappoint. Disguised as a candy store, this Gatsby-esque haunt is password protected, just like the old days.
If you've ever driven by Deep Ellum Candy Company and wondered why there were no customers inside, that's because it isn't just any ordinary sweet shop. It's a front for Truth & Alibi, a bar where you can ring in the Roaring '20s in style.
Inside, the scene is no less convincing. Tons of dispensers are filled to the brim with colorful treats, an elaborate farce to distract from the true nature of the building.
A Prohibition-era speakeasy, complete with waterfall chandeliers and mood lighting, is what lies beyond the candy shop front. Just say the not-so-secret password, which you can find on Truth & Alibi's Facebook page, for entry into the bar via an unassuming door.
Drink in-hand, cozy up on one of many leather couches and strike up a conversation with fellow history buff. This atmosphere is perfect for getting to know someone on a deep, personal level.
Just one thing doesn't quite line up with the Gatsby vibe: this impressively well-stocked bar. While it probably isn't an accurate representation of the times, you certainly won't hear us complaining.
Drink options vary based on season, but there are always plenty to choose from. Expertly mixed cocktails are handcrafted with various juices, bitters, and syrups to create one-of-a-kind sips that light up your taste buds.
