This Enchanting Town In Texas Is Unlike Any Other In The World
There are many small towns in Texas worth visiting, and one of the most enchanting of all is hiding way out west amid the sprawling desert landscape. Marathon is both a nature lover’s and history buff’s dream, surrounded by towering mountains and boasting a distinctive cowboy-esque vibe that harkens back to a bygone era.
Marathon is sometimes referred to as the "Gateway to the Big Bend," but the town of just under 500 is more than just a stopover en route to a final destination - it can hold its own.
Surrounded by towering mountains, Marathon has a mystical energy that only the Desert Southwest is capable of imparting, and you can feel it the moment you pass the signpost.
When in Marathon, staying at the historic Gage Hotel is a must. Dating to 1927, this West Texas icon offers a laid-back, yet luxurious stay in a Southwestern-inspired atmosphere.
Accommodations range from standard rooms to private cottages, and amenities vary based on the lodging option you choose. Either way, prepare to be transported into the past as you live the high life enjoyed by cattle barons during the cowboy era.
Between the cowhide-upholstered furniture and chandeliers made out of deer antlers, the ambiance alone is worth visiting for. When you factor in the regionally-inspired fare such as wild game, beef, fowl, and fresh seafood, the experience is truly second to none.
You'll also find the beautiful Gage Gardens, boasting 27 acres of lush greenery, on the hotel grounds, as well as a pool and outdoor game lot. Don't forget to look up at the stars - this area of Texas boasts some of the darkest night skies in the entire world.
