The Mysterious Petroglyph Site In Texas That Still Baffles Archaeologists To This Day
There are several petroglyph sites in Texas where ancient mysteries abound, including one tucked away in the middle of nowhere. Located in the small town of Paint Rock, this towering limestone cliff boasts over 1,500 petroglyphs – it’s believed to be one of the largest concentrations of rock art in the U.S. – and you can see them firsthand on a guided tour!
Nestled in the tiny town of Paint Rock, Texas (population: 356) is what some believe to be the largest Native American petroglyph site in the U.S.
You'll see everything from animal and human figures to intricate geometric shapes. While the meanings behind many of the drawings have yet to be discovered...
As for the exact indigenous group or groups responsible for these fascinating works of art, nobody knows for sure. Some mysteries are better left unsolved, however.
Also on the property is what the owners believe to be the remains of a Native American dwelling just steps away from the cliff. You can see it, along with the petroglyphs, on a one-hour Saturday guided tour!
