The Spooky Texas Hike That Will Lead You Somewhere Deserted

Located just outside of Jasper, the popular Boykin Springs Recreation Area is hiding an eerie secret. This particular trail is named after an old sawmill – the abandoned ruins of which can be found at the end of the path. Although picturesque, the remains are a thrilling and chilling bonus to what appears to be an ordinary hike. Keep reading to find out more about this spooky adventure.
The trail begins at the bottom of the hill right at the entrance of Boykin Springs Recreation Area, so it's extremely easy to find. A 6.5 mile hike, it's a bit lengthy but suitable for all activity levels and absolutely worth the time once you reach the spooky, abandoned destination at the end.
With small waterfalls, bridges stretching across flowing creeks, and all kinds of vegetation throughout the length of the path, not a minute of boredom will pass. Be sure to bring along a good camera - you'll definitely want to remember the picturesque scenery.
Lined on both sides with thick brush, you might find yourself relieved when you come upon this breathtaking clearing. Take a few minutes to relax and find some peace and quiet before heading back into the wilderness and making your way to the pinnacle of the hike: the deserted sawmill.
After the clearing, trees once again take over the pathway and create a canopy overhead, enveloping you and guiding you towards the highlight of your trip. There's no turning back now, so I hope you're ready!
Here we are: the sawmill. The story behind it is unclear, but one thing's for sure: it's one of the creepiest buildings you'll ever see. Hidden deep in the woods, this dilapidated structure harbors a somber vibe so heavy you can practically feel it weighing you down. Many workers likely died or developed severe injuries during their time of employment here, and their presence can definitely be felt.
The inside is covered in graffiti, only adding to the spooky ambiance. You'll definitely want to hang out here to get some pictures and really soak up the creepiness - if you're brave enough, that is. Just make sure you leave before dark...otherwise, you may not be alone anymore.
To get to the park from Zavalla, head east on Highway 63 for 10.5 miles before turning right on Forest Service Road 313, which you’ll follow for another 2.5 miles.
