In my opinion, Nacogdoches is one of the best college towns in Texas. It’s not too big or too small, it has a rich history, and it’s brimming with quaint shops and restaurants.

The oldest town in Texas, Nacogdoches was founded in 1779 by Spanish Colonel Don Antonio Gil Y’Barbo, who became the first lieutenant governor.

Before that, the area was inhabited by a local tribe of Caddo Indians for approximately 10,000 years.
Along with its rich history, Nacogdoches is known for being home to Stephen F. Austin State University. Named after one of Texas' founding fathers, the college opened in 1923 and is partially located on the homestead of Thomas Jefferson Rusk, one of the town's earliest Anglo settlers.

SFA, as the university is colloquially known, offers more than 120 areas of study, but it specializes in forestry and architecture.
Visitors are welcome to come explore the grounds of the campus.

There is a five-mile hike and bike trail that showcases both the surrounding forest landscape and the school's various buildings, an arboretum, a planetarium, and even a movie theater. Or, you could catch a Lumberjacks or Ladyjacks game!
Given its storied past, Nacogdoches is rife with old buildings.

You'll be transported back to simpler times when you step inside this nostalgic eatery, which is known for its hearty breakfast specials (although it's open all day).

Antique lovers, this one is for you. Auntie Q's, located in The Bosslight Bookstore on Main Street, has so many unique items, including T-shirts, artwork, and tons of little trinkets.
