With new cases of COVID-19 starting to trend downwards in Texas, beaches in unincorporated areas of Galveston County have reopened to the public. Social distancing guidelines still must be strictly adhered to, but at least you can get out and enjoy the sunshine! Here are the details:

Earlier this month, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office announced the reopening of beaches in unincorporated areas.

This order refers strictly to beaches on Bolivar Peninsula, such as Crystal Beach -- not Galveston Island itself.

These unincorporated beaches are being closely monitored by the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management. Further action will be taken if CDC guidelines, including staying at least six feet apart from others and wearing a face mask when that isn't possible, aren't being followed.

Just to reiterate, beaches in the city of Galveston are still closed. One exception is Jamaica Beach, which has been opened to the public but remains closed to traffic.

This decision aligns with Governor Abbott's plan to reopen Texas, which was formally announced just days later. State parks are allowed to reopen provided certain restrictions are in place, nonessential medical procedures may resume, and retail businesses can offer to-go service.

As far as reopening beaches on the island, city officials are devising a plan that will do so while keeping public health and safety the top priority. Options being discussed include limited hours, such as mornings and evenings only, and a further restriction to just weekday mornings. Beaches may be able to reopen by June, however, nothing is certain yet.
