5 Country Roads Near Austin That Are Pure Bliss In The Fall
Fall is the perfect time to take a drive through the country, and some of the roads near Austin are really scenic this time of year. Gas up the car, pack a lunch and don’t forget your camera!


This 81-mile stretch of road connects many ranches to more main thoroughfares, and you'll pass through several pretty towns along the way. Start at Sabinal, travel through Utopia and on to Vanderpool. You'll reach the Lost Maples State Natural Area, which is vibrant with color during fall months. Spend some time at this natural area; take a hike, or enjoy a picnic. It's beautiful this time of year.


Old Leakey Road runs parallel to U.S. Route 83, and takes you past Garner State Park - one of the best spots in the state for fall photography. The Frio river is picturesque and the park offers plenty of recreation, including camping, hiking and biking.


Highway 183 runs right through Caldwell County, where you'll definitely feel like you're in rural Texas. This pretty little county has some wide open spaces, and crosses Plum Creek.

This pretty loop is known as one of the most scenic roads in the Austin area. It takes you along rolling hills and across the gorgeous Pennybacker Bridge, which crosses Lake Austin. The weathered, rust-colored bridge blends in beautifully with the surrounding scenery.


Ranch Road branches off of Texas State Highway 16 just north of Fredericksburg. It will take you right past Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. This spectacular place offers some beautiful views of Hill Country; take a hike to see for yourself!
