This Spring Is Forecast To Be The Most Active Tornado Season Texas Has Seen In Years
Adverse weather is no stranger to the Lone Star State, and this year looks to be shaping up like any other. AccuWeather predicts 5-15% more tornadoes in 2020 than the average – and since more twisters touch down in Texas than anywhere else, we’ll definitely see the increase.
AccuWeather predicts up to 1450 tornadoes this year, which is an increase of almost 400 compared to 2019. While long-range weather forecasts don't always offer the most accurate predictions, they definitely make sure we're always prepared!
In March, an average of 13 tornadoes touch down in the Lone Star State. We clocked in at 14 this year, so above-average for the month (albeit just barely.)
April hasn't seen much activity so far, but we're coming up on the most tornadic month by far. May brings over 40 twisters on average, so only time will tell what 2020 has in store.
Most tornadoes are either very weak on the Fujita scale or only touch down for a brief moment -- and on the best of occasions, both! It's the rare, but potentially deadly major tornadoes we have to watch out for, so staying alert is crucial.
Tornado season never truly ends in our state, especially up North near the Oklahoma border. It's best to stay vigilant year-round, even during months when conditions aren't typically favorable for the development of funnel clouds.
Despite how difficult it can be to predict tornadoes down to the number, the yearly forecast is great at telling us one thing: how much generally severe weather to expect. It looks like this year will be a doozy, so buckle up, y'all!
