This Terrifying Swinging Bridge In Tennessee Will Make Your Stomach Drop
Did you know the longest swinging bridge in THE UNITED STATES is located right here in little ol’ Tennessee? The privately-owned bridge, close to 400 feet across (!!!!), is located on Foxfire Mountain and attracts an impressive amount of tourists on an annual basis. Curious to take a look? Not only do you get to play Indiana Jones for a hot second, but this gorgeous bridge allows for stunning views of the forest amidst its adventurous pull. The trail ends at Lost Mine Falls.
We weren't kidding earlier - the swinging phenomenon is known as "The Bridge to Prosperity." It's close to four feet wide, and stretches to Prosperity Mountain over Dunn's Gorge.
Did you know that swinging bridges were used widely across the Appalachian Mountains? It was necessary to get from one mountain to the other (strangely obvious), and were commonly built using steel cables, rocks and wood in varying degrees.
Nervous about the walk? No worries! Ninety feet of concrete anchors the bridge on either side of the gorge, allowing for a weight of up to 135,000 pounds! It would take a lot of pizza to get there, folks.
