The beauty of Tennessee goes unmatched in the United States, especially when it comes to how varied and shockingly different the topography is from east to west. From the marshy swampland found on the banks of the Mississippi River to the flowered expanse of the Cumberland Plateau, and finally, to the craggy magnificence of the mountains to the east, Tennessee remains one of the prettiest states in the American south. If you’re looking to really take in the state’s beauty, we’d recommend wandering Stone Door Trail, where a series of overlooks will provide a bird’s-eye view of the state from above. Great Stone Door Trail can be found within the South Cumberland State Park in Beersheba Springs, Tennessee. It is actually the largest state park in the Volunteer State, and the name comes from an area within the park that features a long crack in a cliff. It looks like a door left just slightly open!
Make sure you keep an eye out for all the amazing geological features you'll find throughout the park as you hike. Stone Door Trail will lead you straight to a cliff that overlooks Savage Gulf, but the trek there is truly just as stunning.
The Stone Door Trail itself is just under 2 miles and is great for all skill levels. It's known for being both kid and dog friendly, and for the wildflowers that bloom in the springtime. If you're bringing Fido, just make sure he's kept on a leash!
Visitors actually say that the hike feels more like a walking path than a trail, which makes it all the easier to get to a gorgeous outlook. You can access the Laurel Gulf Overlook along the trail, which is actually paved for the 1/4 mile to the overlook.
The Stone Door Trail is an out-and-back trail, with a mere 170 foot elevation gain. But with views like this, you can't miss it. Keep in mind, the first 1/4 mile of the trail is paved, but the rest of the trek is dirt. Bring the right shoes!
