Most folks make their way to Tennessee with stars in their eyes and itineraries full of city adventures. Sure, Memphis is known for its barbecue and Nashville can make a mean plate of hot chicken, but it’s the tiny towns scattered throughout the Volunteer State that hide some of the best meals in the American south. In Pulaski, a historic town about an hour and a half outside of Nashville, there’s an impressive cluster of restaurants that have built a reputation as some of the best spots to eat in the state. If you haven’t been, then you just might want to take a foodie trip to Pulaski. It’s a hidden treasure!
The famed Yellow Deli has a few locations in Tennessee that serve up classic deli fare with freshly made juices and smoothies as well. The Pulaski house it's located in is truly a sight to see, and visitors rave about the homemade bread that each sandwich is served on, as well as the intimate atmosphere and mindfully styled decor. The original location opened in Chattanooga in 1973, and it has since made its way to the town of Pulaski. You can visit for fresh American fare 24 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, from midnight to 3 p.m. on Fridays, and from noon to midnight on Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Saturdays.
At the Blue Bird Cafe, you'll find a menu that's filled with thoughtfully designed menu items and flavorful breakfast and lunch options. Locals rave about the home-cooked brunch, and the hospitality is exactly as you'd hope: kind and consistent. The Blue Bird Cafe serves farm-to-table Southern classics and specializes in a true Tennessee breakfast for lunch. Try the chocolate gravy and the lunch specials! Its location in downtown Pulaski can't be beaten, so make sure to visit from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays, but definitely not on Mondays. It's the one day a week the Blue Bird Cafe takes a well-deserved break.
Reeves Drug Store is a local Pulaski favorite that serves homemade ice cream and soda fountain classics in a historic space. The Reeves Drug Soda Fountain is a foundational part of the community and has been in operation since 1892. You can order a Coke for a nickel, and step back in time for free. There's really nowhere else like it.
If you're looking for great service and a proper steak in Pulaski, then the Rusty Spur Diner is the place to go. This family-owned eatery sears every steak to perfection, and thoughtfully crafted sides and a truly indulgent dessert menu help to round out the experience. The rustic interior adds a cheeky bit of fun to the whole experience, and the family-friendly space makes it a great spot to stop with your favorite little ones.
Warm bread and crispy salad help round out a meal at Mezza Luna Pizza On The Square. Locally lauded for its private catering and Italian classics, this locally owned space provides entrees like lasagna, scrimp scampi and New York strip steak with aplomb. Desserts change based on availability, but there's no better way to end a meal of pizza and pasta than something sweet. Visit Mezza Luna for yourself from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m on Sundays. Mezza Luna closes up shop on Tuesday and Wednesday, so make sure you get your fill the rest of the week!
