True ghost stories have the kind of wicked timbre that keep us up at night, covers over our heads and bodies curled up tight to fend off the creepy crawlies. October is (naturally) the month that spawns these strange stories, and we found this ultra eerie one while scouring the web…have you ever heard of The Thing, the great local monster of Nashville?

When people think of ghost stories and Nashville, they probably think of either the nearby Bell Witch or maybe even the lesser known hauntings of the State Capitol building. However, this is probably the scariest story Nashville has to offer.
The Thing was once much more known than it is today -- it was the most widely known ghost story in Nashville in the early 1900's.

The Thing was experienced at the home of a local couple who were known for holding seances for Nashville's elite. Though many skeptics accused the couple of faking the Thing, many of the same skeptics later became believers after encounters with the creature.
What is the Thing? Many described it as a cat or a dog, but all accounts describe it as a small, dark animal with tremendous power. In encountering the Thing, many seance participants would run home, and many would claim that the creature followed them all the way there.
Still not convinced it's real? The Thing was encountered not only by local Tennessean reporters, but also a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and a future US Secretary of War. All gave eerily similar accounts of the Thing's appearance.
Though the house has since been demolished, you can still walk by the old site on 8th Avenue where the building used to sit. And if you're lucky (unlucky), you might even catch a glimpse of the Thing lurking in the alleyways.
