Of course, Fort Negley has its own legends that surround it. Many whisper that the fort is haunted by the ghosts of soldiers who long ago lost their lives during one of the bloodiest conflicts the United States has ever perpetuated.
The fort was built in a French-style, by stone, and took roughly 4 months to complete. During those four months, between 600 to 800 laborers are thought to have lost their lives. Hard work combined with bad weather, little shelter, and hardly any food will harm even the toughest human being.
The Battle of Nashville was fought a mile away, but Fort Negley was never itself attacked. Still, around 13,000 bodies were buried near the fort. The soldiers were later reburied in the National Nashville Cemetery in Madison, but many believe there are some forgotten bodies left in the ground.
After the war, a cholera epidemic devastated the city of Nashville. Around 1,000 people lost their lives and were haphazardly buried in the city. These shallow graves are also said to be the reason behind ghostly wraiths and works in the night.
