Memphis in May is not simply a time and a place. No, it’s the beginning of an epic festival moniker, better known as the “Memphis in May International Festival.” If you happen to be in West Tennessee during the early springtime, then you’ll want to check out this incredibly fun and quirky local fest. Located right on the banks of the Mississippi River, it doesn’t get more “Memphis” than this.
The Memphis in May International Festival is held during the entire month of May. This year, you can attend from May 3rd to May 25th, 2019.
Why is it an "international festival," you ask? Every year the Events Committee chooses a country to honor. Last year it was the Czech Republic, this year west Tennessee will be honoring the beautiful country of Colombia.

The festival is meant to promote and celebrate not only local Memphis culture, but to also foster international awareness within the community. The city's largest events take place during the festival, including the famed World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Beale Street Music Festival.

The festival operates off of the mission statement, "Bringing the World to Memphis, And Memphis to the World." With more than $137 million earned towards the city on an annual basis, there really is no other event that infuses the city with such a significant number of tourists.
The Great American River Run is a 5k and Half-marathon that streaks through the heart of Memphis during Memorial Day weekend. This year, runners can look forward to an intense post-race party full of music and fun. If you're going to run, there might as well be a prize at the end, right? Right.
The Beale Street Music Festival takes place over three days and four stages throughout Memphis. It's been a popular local event since 1977, and will feature more than sixty bands and acts throughout the weekend of May 3rd to May 5th. It makes for the best way to kick off the festival month!
