Memphis is best-known for its musical history, and the famed dining and fun found on Beale Street; but it’s the Memphis Botanic Garden that just might be one of the most beautiful places in the city — and Tennessee! The gardens are especially breathtaking during the fall when the leaves are changing and the foliage begins to shift, and it’s an affordable spot for the whole family to enjoy.
The Memphis Botanic Garden can be found right in the heart of Memphis, Tennessee, in Audubon Park. The 96-acre landscape boasts multiple gardens perfect for wandering on a warm afternoon.
The gardens are best-known to locals for hosting multiple community events throughout the year, including the popular Mother's Day Jazz Brunch and Daffodil Dash Race. Educational opportunities are also hosted on-site for both children and adults.
If you're a music lover, make sure to keep an eye out for outdoor musical events and concert series each season. Plant sales are also conducted throughout the year to benefit the garden's horticultural programs.
The gardens were established initially in 1953, and the later implementation of a magnolia garden and arboretum firmly elevated the status of the local spot. The title, "Memphis Botanic Garden" was formally instituted in 1966.
Today you can visit 23 specialty gardens on-site, including an herb garden with over 500 types of herbs, the Memphis Garden Club Water Garden, and a rose garden with 75 varieties of roses.
The Memphis Botanic Garden is considered the location of a Level 4 Arboretum, of which there are only four in the entire state of Tennessee. The Hosta Trail found within the gardens is also one of only 15 nationally certified trails by the American Hosta Society in the country.
