Chattanooga's Incline Railway has been operating since 1895, carrying passengers from the base of Lookout Mountain to its crest.

The Incline takes off from the historic St. Elmo neighborhood at the base of Lookout Mountain and drops off its passengers at Point Park on the summit.

Originally, the railway was constructed to make it easier for tourists wanting to see the Civil War battlefield and the luxury hotel to reach the top of the mountain. The Incline turned a 4-hour buggy ride into a climb of less than half an hour.

Nicknamed "America's Most Amazing Mile," the Incline Railway is one of the world's steepest passenger railways, climbing at over a 72% grade straight up the mountain.

The railway is open seven days a week from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm. Round trip tickets are $15 for adults, but kids and seniors get discounts. You can also buy tickets that include a round trip, and admission to both Rock City and Ruby Falls.

Trains leave every 20 minutes from both stations, so you don't have to worry about overcrowded cars. The ride takes only 15 minutes to travel the mile from one station to the other.

For those afraid of heights -- no need to worry. The Incline also happens to be known as "America's Safest Mile." In the history of the Incline Railway, no passengers have ever been injured on the Incline.
