In Tennessee, it can be easy to feel like waterfalls are a dime a dozen. We’ve got so many great ones that it can honestly be hard to choose if you’re looking for a quick and scenic retreat for the weekend. If you’re having a hard time picking, though, you need to find this hidden gem just an hour and a half West of Knoxville. It may be one of the most underrated (and under-visited) waterfalls in the state, but you’ll just have to find it first….
Colditz Cove is located on the Cumberland Plateau, just outside of the small town of Allardt. The natural area is often overlooked by those looking to hike in the area, but those who do visit are not let down.
The cove's most stunning feature is the 60-foot Northrup Falls, named after one of the families that first settled in the region. They owned and operated a mill above the falls.
The falls are known for their natural "rock houses," the overhangs behind the caves. There is evidence that Woodlands Indians even used these caves as homes as far back as 3,000 years ago.
The scenery around the falls might just be as beautiful as the cascade itself. Trees more than 200 years old and patches of rhododendrons line the path all the way from the trailhead to the falls.
The hike from the trailhead to the falls is pretty short and easy. Feel free to bring the kids! Just be sure to wear good shoes, as the wet rocks are slippery.
When you hike back to the falls, be sure to walk around the surrounding cove. You never know what views of the falls you'll discover, and you'll likely see some of the cove's unique wildlife!
