Few things will make you appreciate the great outdoors more than spending some quality time around a beautiful lake. There is certainly no shortage of scenic lakes in South Carolina, especially the popular Lake Jocassee, but there’s one beautiful lake that will quickly capture your heart with its stunning scenery and endless activities, including swimming, boating, camping, and more. So grab your camping gear, pack your bags, and let's go explore Lake Keowee!
Stretching out for 26 miles and covering approximately 18,500 acres, Lake Keowee might just be the most scenic lake in South Carolina.
It’s located in the northwestern corner of the beautiful upstate area. You’ll never run out of things to do here.
The man-made reservoir was built in the 1970s and has been a favorite hang-out for locals ever since. With 300 miles of shoreline, you're sure to find a great spot to enjoy.
There are several parks peppered around the shoreline to explore, each one offering stunning views, swimming, boating, and fishing opportunities.
Starting at the northern end of the lake, Keowee Toxaway State Park and Pickens County Park-Mile Creek are both popular spots for fishing, so be sure to bring your rod and reel.
The lake has three types of bass (largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted) as well as both rainbow and brown trout, catfish, bluegills, and more.
Further south you’ll find South Cove County Park, another enjoyable park with all the outdoor adventure you can handle, 48 acres of 86 campsites, areas for fishing, hiking, and picnicking.
Sandy beaches pepper the shoreline at all of these parks, and the trellises provide some much welcomed shade when the sun starts to beat down.
While the lake is perfect for a day trip, if you’d like to extend your stay, you’ve plenty of options.
RV and tent campsites offer some truly stunning camping spots, like this one pictured above. Imagine waking up to this view!
After a long day of paddling, swimming, and fishing, retire back to your campsite and find yourself a quiet place to watch the sunset.
