Enjoy A Scenic Train Ride And Spend The Night In A Rail Car At This Little-Known Minnesota Railroad
Discover a scenic train ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad and stay overnight in a repurposed railcar at the Northern Rail Traincar Inn in Minnesota.
Although you'd have to hop an interstate passenger train for a true onboard sleeping experience, you can still make your own overnight rail adventure in Minnesota with one of the most scenic train rides in Minnesota to Two Harbors and an overnight stay in an authentic railcar. So, hop aboard the North Shore Scenic Railroad and start your journey!
Start your adventure in Duluth at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.
Arrive early so you can spend some time exploring the museum's collection of historic trains and memorabilia. You may even wish to spend the night nearby in Duluth's Canal Park, so you can get a jump on the adventure!

Then you'll board a train for the 28-mile excursion on the North Shore Scenic Railroad.
The train ride initially traces the stunning Lake Superior shoreline and offers splendid vistas out over the water.
If you can, you'll want to try and sit on the right side of the train on the way to Two Harbors and the left side on the way back.

It then travels through the rugged, forested landscape of Minnesota's North Shore.
After about 90 minutes, the train arrives in the charming North Shore town of Two Harbors.
Take some time to explore the downtown area, or relax with a cold beverage at Castle Danger Brewery. You can preview your trip to and from Two Harbors in this YouTube video from North Shore Scenic Railroad:
Once you've had time to stretch your legs in Two Harbors, make your way to the Northern Rail Traincar Inn.
The inn is a few miles from the Two Harbors depot, so you'll need to arrange for transportation with a car service or taxi.
The inn's rooms are all built into repurposed rail cars.
A common hallway and roof connect two rows of railcars. You won't be moving, but you'll be sleeping in an authentic railcar after a scenic train ride.
The inn offers several room sizes and themes from which to choose. Visit the inn on the web for additional details and for reservation information.
Of course, upon reaching Two Harbors, you don't have to stay in a railcar. You could choose to spend the night in a lighthouse, instead. Regardless, be sure to take some time to explore Two Harbors and its environs. For example, your accommodation is within easy reach of three of the best pie shops in Minnesota. You'll also be super close to Silver Creek Cliff and its spectacular tunnel. Hike along the trail on the lakeside of the cliff - which, prior to the 1990s, was the right of way for the North Shore Scenic Byway (talk about a white knuckle drive - I'm glad the tunnel's there now!). And, perhaps most significantly, you'll be only a few minutes away from Gooseberry Falls State Park, an icon of Minnesota's North Shore.

Did you know that there's a place in the Land of 10,000 Lakes where you can stay in a cabin with its own private waterfall? It's true - all you need to do to find it is head up to the North Shore of Lake Superior and check in at Cascade Lodge in Minnesota. The lodge also happens to be adjacent to the stunning Cascade River State Park and all its tumbling waterfalls and rapids, as well. There may not be a better place to stay in the Bold North if you're a lover and/or chaser of waterfalls.

Folks have been escaping to historic Cascade Lodge since the 1920s - and once you see where it is, you'll absolutely understand why.
Fronted by panoramic views of Lake Superior and its own slice of basalt shoreline, the lodge backs up against state park and national forest land that marches up the dramatic bluffs behind it.
The property is tucked into a small valley, that meanders from the shoreline, between two bluffs toward a ridge line.
Clearly, Cascade Lodge's setting on Lake Superior's rugged North Shore is a large part of the attraction.
As is the cozy and congenial lodge, where you can gather with other guests to enjoy conversation and games with a view.
Or, you can simply snuggle into one of the comfy chairs and enjoy a crackling fire. The slapping waves of Lake Superior are also soothing when tucked into one of the resort's Adirondack chairs.

The on-site Cascade Restaurant and Pub means you don't have to leave the property.
The Cascade Lodge menu is punctuated by comfort food and traditional favorites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
You'll also find a full bar with a solid beer and wine selection if, like I do, you enjoy a beverage with your nature views.
Speaking of nature, Cascade Creek runs directly through the Cascade Lodge property as it flows from the Sawtooth Mountains above the lodge, through the property's valley, to Lake Superior below.
The creek tumbles into several small cascades and cataracts on its way down.
This means that several of Cascade Lodge's cabins offer guests a pleasant view of the rushing stream.

But Cabin 11, located near the restaurant and across the creek from the rest of the property, is a little more special.
Not only does it boast its own foot bridge...
This historic 1927 log cabin is perched above the precipice of its own private waterfall.
Because of this romantic setting, Cabin 11 has come to be known as the "Honeymoon Cabin" at Cascade Lodge.
Not enough of a waterfall for you? No worries. Jump on one of the trails connecting Cascade Lodge with Cascade River State Park, and in less than a mile, you'll be enjoying a feast of waterfalls.
In the park, the Cascade River tumbles down fall after fall as it makes it way to Lake Superior. I particularly enjoy visiting in the springtime, when the snowmelt has the falls roaring!
If you're a waterfall enthusiast, you can't do much better when it comes to accommodations in Minnesota than Cascade Lodge. The resort is open year-round, and it's incredibly beautiful in wintertime, as well. For more information and to book your stay, check out Cascade Lodge's listing on the web.
