We've all heard the tired, worn out stereotypes about Texas time and time again. Mostly, they come from people who have either never visited Texas once in their lives, or who just like to get a rise out of us. It's high time to put those stereotypes to rest, wouldn't you agree? Here are the 10 stereotypes that we all probably hear way too often:
1) We all ride horses to school or work.
Seeing as most people in Texas don't even own horses, this couldn't be further from the truth. We live in the 21st century now, and have these things called cars that get us where we need to go (sorry to burst your bubble).
2) We all live on a farm in the middle of nowhere.
Nope, most of us live in the suburbs, actually. Maybe not huge cities like Houston or Austin, but at least a mid-sized city.
3) All of Texas is just a flat patch of grass.
Nah, we have hills, mountains, canyons, valleys, beaches, plateaus, and rocks galore. Just ask any true Texan; they know how diverse our state is.
4) We're all cowboys.
Or cowgirls.
Nothing against cowboys or cowgirls, but they definitely don't make up our entire population. We're a diverse bunch here in Texas.
5) We survive on chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.
Sure, that might describe a lot of our meals, but we do still enjoy fresh grown fruit and vegetables!
6) We all became wealthy from taking over our grandpa's oil business.
While many of us Texans might wish this was true, most of us put in hard work earning an honest living in some other way.
7) We're all a bunch of illiterate, dumb hillbillies.
We actually have several highly rated universities, including A&M, University of Texas, Baylor, and Rice University. Plus, most of us know how to read and write, thank you very much.
8) All Texans are diehard football fans.
Not EVERYONE here is a raging sports fan, even though you will hear all the time about how football is a religion in Texas. But, some people might just be a casual fan, or never watch sports at all. Maybe we're predictable with a lot of things, but as far as our interests go, we like to shake things up sometimes.
9) We just drink beer, and nothing else.
Ever heard of Dr Pepper anyone? Sweet tea? Or, I don't know, water?
10) We're all as arrogant and full of pride as this map would have you believe.
Okay, so maybe this is pretty accurate, but hey, when you live in a state as awesome as Texas, why WOULDN'T you brag about it?!
