It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there are some weird Philadelphia habits we've all picked up. From our language to the way we eat, there are a couple of traits that set Philadelphians apart. How many can you relate to?
1. Believe in the Sixers.
I swear, I've heard "next year" every June for the past decade. We might put a little too much trust in the process…
2. Buy pretzels from anyone.
We know the best pretzels come from the wholesale guys who buy them in the morning and sell them on street corners.
3. Park wherever we want.
Median? Sure. Double park? Why not. The PPA is going to ticket you regardless, so we park wherever we want to.
4. Lose friendships over cheesesteaks.
One time, someone I trusted told me that we were going to go out for Cheesesteaks, and then they took me down Passyunk. Never falling for that one again.
5. Judge pizza from other cities.
I'm not really sure why other parts of the country even try. If you're not from Philly, Jersey, or NYC, you probably can't make great pizza.
6. Know our revolutionary history.
Philadelphians love our history - from City Hall down to City Tavern - and we'll gladly tell you all you need to know about Ben Franklin and Betsy Ross.
7. Pig out on Tastykakes.
I'm not sure how other cities survive without Tastykakes, especially during the halloween season when the Witchy Treats come out.
8. Go "up the Poconos" or "down the Shore"
I'm not sure who coined these phrases, but that's how Philadelphians travel.
9. Argue over sandwich names
It's a hoagie. The end.
10. Speak like a Philadelphian.
"Young bol," "jawn," and more... one weird Philadelphia habit is definitely the way that we speak.
11. Defend Philadelphia.
We love our city. If you don’t, you’re wrong. Don’t try to compare it to New York. Don’t say it’s dirty or dangerous. We love this city because it is the best of ALL worlds - historic and modern, bustling and peaceful, beautiful and… more beautiful. Spend some time here and you’ll see exactly what we mean.
We love weird Philadelphia - perhaps that's why you can never take Philly out of the Philadelphian!
