Each and every place, no matter how wonderful, comes with its shortcomings. If you don't know the nuances to life in Pennsylvania, we're here to help warn you. Some of these may be a bit tongue-in-cheek, but many of them are real facts of life for the residents here in Pennsylvania. How do these shortcomings compare to your own home state?
1. Taxes
Pennsylvania taxes are among the highest in the country, and might leave you scratching your head and wondering where all of your hard-earned money went.
2. Oh Deer
The deer in Pennsylvania just love to jump out when you least expect them to... Especially at night or on slippery, windy roads. We suspect that automobile manufacturers may be bribing them to destroy our cars so that we have to pay to repair them...
3. Weird Liquor Laws
Have you ever purchased liquor at a grocery store or a Target? The concept would blow the mind of most Pennsylvanians.
4. Potholes
If you're not careful, you might fall in. Each winter, the roads crack under the weight of freezing snow, and we're left with craters in the streets.
5. Extreme Temperatures
We are fortunate enough to experience all four seasons here, but each comes with its own downfalls... Such as the scorching heat of summer that might burn your eyebrows off, or the frigid ice of winter that won't release its grip for months at a time.
6. Ghosts
Maybe it's because of Gettysburg battlefield, a reportedly very haunted place, or maybe it's just because Pennsylvania's name sounds like Transylvania, the famous home of Count Dracula. Either way, Pennsylvania has gained a reputation as one of the most haunted states in the entire country. Boo!
7. Infuriated or Infuriating Drivers
A lot of city drivers here are short-tempered... In Philadelphia, you will have to contend with impatient drivers who all seem to be rushing to deliver a baby, while in Pittsburgh, the roads are so confusing that even if you know exactly where you need to go, you're going to deal with other drivers who are confused or lost.
8. First Day of Deer Season
Have you head? Many Pennsylvania schools are closed on the first day of hunting season for deer because it is such a popular occasion for hunters. This is not, I repeat, NOT a good day to go for an innocuous hike through the woods.
9. Getting Lost
Pennsylvania has hundreds upon hundreds of miles of strikingly beautiful natural terrain and forests. This lends its own unique set of challenges to adventurers, however... Like what to do when you lose the trail and get completely lost for hours. It's best to always stick to clearly marked paths and have a cell phone in case of emergency.
10. Misunderstanding Dialects
Pennsylvania acts as a boundary among the northeast, midwest, and southeast... So, as you could imagine, many different cultures mingle here. As a result, the state has five or six different dialects which is more than any other state in the U.S. Try not to get too confused when someone calls a hoagie a grinder, or a water fountain a bubbler.
