We’ve all had to make huge adjustments to the way we live our lives since Covid-19 began its rampage. While we’ve all learned how to cope differently, whether we’re in isolation or continuing to go to work each day, we can probably agree that there are just some things every Pennsylvanian will do once quarantine is over.
1. Hang out with family and friends.
This certainly isn’t unique to us Pennsylvanians, but it’s pretty much guaranteed that at the top of all of our lists will be catching up – in person – with all of the family and friends from whom we’ve been physically separated for weeks.
2. Go to the closest state park.
Sure, we can embark on a refreshing hike at our state parks now, but all of the facilities are closed; camping isn’t allowed; and all events have been canceled. We also have to worry about social distancing, which can add stress to a normally relaxing experience. What’s the first park you’ll go to?
3. Catch a movie at the drive-in.
We’re pretty fortunate to have access to several drive-ins, including the oldest in the United States (Shankweiler's Drive-In). Whether we pile the whole family or our best friends into the car, we’re heading to the drive-in for a double feature, multiple trips to the concession stand, and a night under the stars.
4. Head to the nearest amusement park.
Assuming we’re out of quarantine when the weather is warm, can you think of a better way to spend a carefree day than at Hersheypark, Knoebels Amusement Park, or Kennywood Park? We might even try rides we’ve never been on before. After all, we’ve made it through quarantine; nothing can scare us now.
5. Sit down to a delicious meal at our favorite mom and pop restaurant.
We’ll be craving a good meal among family and friends by the time this is all over, and you can’t beat a home-cooked meal from a local mom and pop restaurant. Fortunately, Pennsylvania’s brimming with them – from Kuppy’s Diner in Middletown to Neptune Diner in Lancaster.
6. Go to the zoo.
Many of Pennsylvania’s zoos have made it easy to visit virtually these days – whether by watching the penguins on a webcam at the Pittsburgh Zoo or the Philadelphia Zoo or by joining the kids at virtual zoo school at the Elmwood Park Zoo. Nothing, however, compares to a day at our local zoo, visiting the animals, eating goodies, and enjoying each other’s company.
7. Catch a ballgame.
Even if we’re not sports’ fans, we can all probably agree that the return of sports will make life seem so much closer to normal. Whether we’re cheering on the Phillies or the Pirates, the Steelers or the Eagles, or the Flyers or the Penguins, we can all enjoy that experience of being together again.
8. Strike up a conversation with new friends.
Pennsylvanians have always been friendly, striking up conversations with strangers who quickly become friends. We’ll be able to go back to those leisurely conversations again one day without worrying about standing six feet apart.
