Too often, if you hear a joke about Nebraska it's making fun of the terrain or the Huskers. We won't wander into that territory, but sometimes it's good to laugh at ourselves. Some jokes about Nebraska are actually funny - especially those you can really relate to. Please keep in mind these are just jokes, not meant to offend anyone or insult Nebraska.
Lots of people have poked fun at our tourism board's slogan, "Nebraska Nice." This video from Omaha Live! does it best.
If you're unfamiliar with our climate, the winters can be a little shocking...
This is a corny joke, but a good question nonetheless.

Some winters, it feels like Nebraska gets picked on weather-wise.

For all the shoveling and snow blowing we do, we might as well just take up residence outside.
Some years, it's kind of hard to tell.
Sometimes winter just goes on...and on...and on...
Especially appropriate today...
We've been having semi-mild temperatures, but today a nasty winter storm is forecast to bury us all in snow. We've definitely gone from shorts to snow shovels in the same week many times.
It should be no big surprise that most of the inoffensive jokes about Nebraska have to do with the weather. It may be crazy sometimes, but we'll take it over living anywhere else. Be safe out there, stay warm, and does anyone want to come shovel my driveway for me?
Life in Nebraska has a way of seeping into your soul. Whether your family has been here for generations or you just moved here, it becomes a part of you. No matter where you go, you take a little piece of this beautiful place with you. And if you have to leave, chances are you'll think about it often. Just about everyone who has moved away from Nebraska has thought these things about Nebraska life from time to time.

1. People really are nicer in Nebraska.
Every once in a while you'll come across a person living in Nebraska who doesn't hold the door open for the person behind them...but even more often you'll encounter the people who see you coming from half a block away and stand there patiently holding that door. We were just raised like that.
2. There's no sunset like a Nebraska sunset.
There's probably some sciencey reason for this having to do with our latitude and elevation and that kind of thing...but we'd prefer to think of it as magic.

3. When you leave, you realize that the summer night sounds different anywhere else.
The chirping of crickets, the buzzing of cicadas, and the resounding calls of bullfrogs are a part of us. Most of us don't realize just how important those sounds are until we move away and no longer hear them.
4. There's no night sky like the Nebraska night sky.
The dome of stars overhead is one of the most spectacular sights you'll ever see during your Nebraska life. It doesn't get any prettier than right here at home.

5. It's annoying when you're in it, but you actually miss the extreme wind once you leave.
It may sound crazy, but you get nostalgic for that powerful, blustery wind once you can no longer feel it.
6. There's nothing quite like driving on a dirt road for miles and miles and encountering no one but cattle.
Driving those country roads is like Nebraskan meditation.

7. It's really not summer without our beloved county fairs...
8. ...sitting around a fire pit swapping stories...
9. ...and catching fireflies
10. Winter is an adventure in Nebraska.
We know what to expect out of a Nebraska winter, but when and how severe it's going to be is always a surprise.

11. Wide open spaces are so underrated.
There is peace and privacy in these sparsely populated places. In denser areas, we start to feel crowded.
12. Nebraska's small towns are the absolute best.
They're full of quirky businesses, great people, and small-town charm...and you won't find quite the same combination anywhere else.

13. Freshly cut alfalfa is what home smells like.
Other states grow alfalfa, but those fresh-cut fields don't smell quite the same outside of Nebraska
14. Other states only wish they had our incredible summer storms.
You haven't really lived until you've stood outside in a sudden deluge, watching the sky boil and hearing low thunder rumble for miles.

15. Nebraska has its own unique feel.
The quiet stillness and the fresh air are so soothing to the soul when growing up in Nebraska.

16. You can always spot another Nebraskan, no matter where you are.
Is it the Huskers sweatshirt? The down-to-earth attitude? The constant nostalgia for Runzas? It's a mystery...but we can always spot each other even when we're away from home.
17. There's really no place like home.
When you move away, Nebraska is always with you. Coming home makes your heart a little lighter every time.

Ask native Nebraskans what phrase they associate with our state and you're bound to hear "The Good Life." These three little words were our state's slogan at one time; since then, our tourism board has proclaimed that we're "Nebraska Nice" and cheekily claimed that "Honestly, it's not for everyone." Still, the Welcome to Nebraska sign bears those familiar old words, and we think they're the most accurate way to welcome people to the Cornhusker State.

When you're returning from a journey outside of Nebraska, whether it's been years or just a few days, there's no sweeter sight than our familiar green Nebraska state sign.
The iconic design has greeted motorists at our borders for decades. Despite our state motto having changed officially, "The Good Life" will always be the perfect description of our beloved home state.
It's only appropriate that we remind everyone crossing the border that Arbor Day was founded here. It's a point of pride for us natives, and it reminds visitors that Nebraska is way more than the mostly treeless expanses of I-80.
Have you seen the Welcome to Nebraska sign on the I-80?
Whether you're coming home to Nebraska or just visiting...
...embarking on an epic trip to marvel at the scenery...

...or looking to conquer some new challenges, Nebraska is always happy to welcome you.
Once you see the Nebraska sign, you can be sure that when you're here, you'll be living The Good Life.
How do you feel when you see the iconic Welcome to Nebraska sign that says, "Nebraska ... the good life?" Does it bring a sense of warm familiarity? Are you as fond of our former state slogan as we are? Tell your stories in the comments!
