Here in Mississippi, we’ve got our own way of doing things. Others may not understand our methods but that’s quite alright because we’re perfectly content with the way things are. Not sure exactly what we’re referring to? Don’t think Mississippians do anything that outsiders would consider strange or unusual? Take a look at the list below and you’ll quickly realize that Mississippi is America’s black sheep and it’s exactly what makes the state so amazing!
1. Schools close for the county fair.
With fairs as great as ours, it'd be wrong to not close the schools.
2. We pull over, even when we’re not forced.
Although not legally obligated, it’s a common practice in Mississippi to pull over for funeral processions.
3. Forget cookies and milk; here in Mississippi, it’s cornbread and milk.
There’s nothing like some cornbread soaked in a glass of cold milk.
4. We prefer our peanuts in a bottle of Coke...
But the bottle MUST be glass. Hey, we have our standards.
5. or boiled.
And we all know the best ones come from roadside vendors.
6. We have our own version of Tupperware...
Look in most Mississippians' refrigerators, and you’re bound to find a Cool Whip or Country Crock container filled with leftovers.
7. and wine.
Here in Mississippi, the only wine you need is the "house wine of the south," otherwise known as sweet tea.
8. Mayonnaise is a very important condiment.
Not only does it make a ‘mater and mayo sandwich, but it goes great on butter beans, bananas, tomatoes, and pear salad - just to name a few.
9. We expect sandwiches to be meal-worthy.
After you get used to overstuffed po’boys, regular sandwiches just won’t cut it.
10. And sometimes, we even prefer to eat our fries on the sandwich.
Is a French fry po’boy not the best invention ever?
11. Some of us have a habit of eating things that grow wild.
Until you’ve tasted the sweetness of a honeysuckle or juiciness of a blackberry, you can’t judge.
12. We have specific expectations when it comes to our New Year’s Day meal.
Cabbage and black-eyed peas, anyone?
13. Gravy should always be a part of breakfast.
Sausage, tomato, chocolate – we like gravy and we like options.
14. To us, all soft drinks are “Coke.”
"Soda" and "pop" just don't exist here.
15. We have high expectations when it comes to seafood...
Hey, when you come from a state known for producing catfish and the Gulf of Mexico forms one of your borders, you tend to get a little spoiled in the seafood department.
16. and hot tamales.
Our tamales are so good, they have an entire culinary trail dedicated to them.
17. When it comes to manners, we’re pretty strict.
Here, words like "please, thank you, ma’am, and sir" are expected.
18. “Y’all” is used A LOT.
We have our own way of doing things in Mississippi, and that includes talkin’.
19. Probably just as much as “bless your heart.”
This expression is used so often, it could easily be the state slogan.
20. Just about any creek or pond is fair game for swimming.
When the temperature starts rising, there’s nothing like cooling off at a local swimming hole.
21. Call us snooty, but we prefer our version of champagne and caviar.
The unique pairing is a classic and a must-try!
Black sheep or not, you have to admit Mississippi is overall a great place to live.
