When you live in Massachusetts long enough, you start to aquire a special sort of local knowledge. Some common English words means something totally different in the Bay State, and quirky customs abound. Here are some questions that only Massachusetts natives will know the answers to.
1. What’s a regular coffee?
Out-of-staters might assume this means a black coffee, but they’d be wrong. A "coffee regular" has cream and sugar. How much actually depends on what part of the state you live in, but it’s definitely not black.
2. Where should you go if you’re thirsty?
The bubbler, of course. Or maybe the packie.
3. What can you get at the Vineyard?
Fudge, pastel shorts, sailing lessons and seafood. Wine from the vine? No so much.
4. What do we sing during the 8th inning?
"Sweet Caroline," of course. This Neil Diamond hit is synonymous with the Boston Red Sox and is played during the 8th inning at Fenway.
5. Where does the Green Monster live?
He hangs out at Fenway Park in Boston. Good luck getting tickets to sit on him.
6. Who lives at Tanglewood?
Though it sounds like a fairy tale village, it’s actually the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
7. Can I get a spoon for this?
Only weirdos eat a Hoodsie Cup with anything but a tiny wooden paddle.
8. What’s red and tasty and comes from a bog?
Cranberries of course!
9. What’s over the bridge?
If you’re a Cape Codder, the rest of Massachusetts lives "over the bridge."
10. What’s a candlepin?
A necessary component of the best sort of bowling.
11. Are there tomatoes in the chowder?
No. Just no. You have to head out of state for that nonsense.
12. Where do you park the car?
Anywhere but Harvard Yard. You’ll get one monster of a ticket.
13. Why isn’t there ice cream in this milkshake?
Because you didn’t order a frappe.
14. How far away is it?
If you answered in anything but hours and minutes, you might not be from Massachusetts.
